Ours to Choose

One day no one will suffer alone in our community.

One day people will lead with kindness and compassion. Stigma, judgement and classist views and behaviors will be considered unacceptable and the community will self-enforce this standard.

One day substance misuse will be understood and treated as a medical, emotional and psychological issue. Not criminal.

One day the community will be so aware of the pain created by sexual violence and abuse that it will be an unthinkable breach of community standards. Survivors will be supported and cared for throughout the community.

One day military veterans will be actively and intentionally welcomed back to the community. Veteran, civic, social, business and religious groups will work together to create individual plans with and for each veteran, centering all efforts on the vet's abilities, needs and ambitions.

One day, lifelong learning will the norm. Education will be seen as learning every single day, no matter age, interest or station in life.

Harm Reduction

Picture
Harm reduction is an approach to addressing substance use and other high-risk behaviors that aims to reduce the harms associated with these behaviors, without necessarily requiring abstinence or complete cessation. Harm reduction recognizes that not everyone is ready or able to stop using substances or engaging in other high-risk behaviors, and that attempting to enforce complete abstinence can be counterproductive or even harmful. Instead, harm reduction seeks to minimize the negative consequences of substance use and other behaviors, while also promoting safety, health, and overall well-being.

Some examples of harm reduction strategies include:
  • Providing cleaning supplies to people who use injection drugs to reduce the risk of blood-borne infections like HIV and hepatitis C.
  • Distributing naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, to people who use opioids and their loved ones.
  • Offering fentanyl test strips to help people determine the purity of their drugs and reduce the risk of overdose.
  • Offering education and resources to help people reduce the harms associated with other high-risk behaviors.
Harm reduction is important for several reasons:
  1. It saves lives:
Harm reduction strategies can prevent overdose deaths, reduce the spread of infectious diseases, and minimize other health risks associated with substance use and other high-risk behaviors.
  2. It promotes dignity and respect:
By recognizing that people who use substances or engage in other high-risk behaviors are deserving of respect, care, and support, harm reduction promotes human dignity and reduces stigma.
  3. It supports recovery:
Harm reduction can be an important step towards recovery for people who are not yet ready or able to stop using substances or engaging in other high-risk behaviors. By providing resources and support, harm reduction can help people move towards a healthier and more stable life.
  4. It is evidence-based:
Harm reduction strategies are supported by decades of research and have been shown to be effective in reducing harm and promoting health.
Overall, harm reduction is an important approach to addressing substance use and other high-risk behaviors that values human life, dignity, and well-being. If you or someone you know needs to find out more about harm reduction, please contact us at 574-223-2233.
